Salt Dough Christmas Craft Workshop

Girlguiding East Yorkshire County Crafts Training Day
Saturday October 11th 2003

I was asked at our County Team Weekend, way back in February, if I would run some sort of workshop at the planned Training Day in the following October ... it being so far ahead, I said "Yes" and promptly forgot about it. Fortunately they emailed me with details just before the date, which served as a reminder!

The training consisted of two one-and-a-half hour sessions, with 13 Guiders booked on the morning session and 15 on the afternoon session. As it was being held in a large secondary school I did expect suitable facilities but unfortunately we were allocated an ordinary classroom which was less than ideal as we had no water, and a carpeted floor!

I produced a handout of three different salt dough recipes, two oven-dry and one air-dry, which I gave out at the end of the session : you can download this handout by right-clicking here and selecting "Save Target As..."

I made up a batch of each of the different recipes and took them to the training with me, sealed in plastic bags, and also took along the raw materials to make more dough if needed (it was!) I also took a large mixing bowl, rolling pin, various knives, assorted kitchen utensils which I thought might create interesting textures (nutmeg grater, lemon zester, icing nozzles etc.) and a variety of biscuit cutters.

Most of the workshop was practical hands-on stuff - after a brief explanation and demonstration, they were raring to go! Most used cutters to make tree decorations but a couple of adventurous souls made more ambitious three-dimensional decorations, so I had to show them how to hollow them out if they ever wanted them to dry...

At the end of each session the attendees packed their efforts into plastic boxes (having been forewarned) and left, and I got down to the task of cleaning the scattered dough and flour off the carpet.

(When I got home, I also added a Salt Dough page to one of my websites, The Singing Snowmen : do have a look!)
